We welcome members of most recognized yacht clubs to our Clubhouse facilities. We have an excellent Galley and very friendly Burgee Bar. We are closed on Monday and Tuesday, and open on Wednesday through Sunday with lunch and dinner served every day. Breakfast is served on Saturdays and Sundays. Please contact the BYC Front Office to inquire about reciprocity privileges with your yacht club.  All Letters of Introductions must be sent to [email protected].

Because of the limited amount of moorage in our area, we can only offer this part of our facility to members of other clubs that also have such accommodations, i.e. moorage available to our members while cruising in your area.

Why does the Governor’s Cup matter?
The easiest answer is “the kids” and that includes not only the competitors but also the young people serving as boat hostesses and hosts, and younger BYC Junior Program members with big dreams. But to the extent that one of the objectives of the Balboa Yacht Club is to “give back’ to the sport we love, the Governor’s Cup fills that bill “in spades.” It has helped start the careers of many of the world’s most successful sailors. But even more importantly, it has helped develop life-long friendships among the competitors. And, as any of you who have attended a “Gov Cup” can attest, it renews your faith in young people from all over the world. These are engaged, smart and personable competitors who are a credit to their clubs and countries.

In the beginning...
California Governor (later US President) Ronald Reagan granted the Deed of Gift for the Governor’s Cup to Balboa Yacht Club in 1967 “for the purpose of encouraging Youth Racing in the State of California and the recognition of the skill and high performance of those men and women under twenty years of age…” As an invitation only match racing regatta, the Governor’s Cup was established by the late Chet and Glee Purcell. Mr. and Mrs. Purcell had a vision that a national match racing competition should be created for younger sailors, similar in format to the internationally recognized Congressional Cup Regatta. As the years progressed, the Governor’s Cup grew in popularity with its first international team participating in 1989. Since then, teams from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Finland, and Spain have participated and become regular entrants and often multiple winners. The Cup has served as a gateway for future champions in collegiate competition, the Olympics, Congressional Cup, Swedish Match Tour, and numerous America’s Cups. The Governor’s Cup has a special relationship with the America’s Cup with the latter having visited Balboa Yacht Club during “Gov Cup Week” twice in recent years. Norbert Bajurin, Commodore of the current holder of the America’s Cup, said it best, “The Governor’s Cup is the America’s Cup for youth.” Truer words were never spoken. BYC can be very proud of this illustrious history and its alumni from fourteen countries and territories around the world. When you watch this and every year’s Governor’s Cup, you are seeing some of the future stars of the sport.

The mission of the BYC MSSF is to engage in activities supporting scientific and educational purposes, including the development of yachting and seamanship. Over the years, the Foundation’s support has enabled many individuals to pursue their goals ranging from learning to sail all the way to pursuit of Olympic Gold. Through Foundation grants, sailors young and old are able to realize their goals and dreams on the water.

The Foundation was started in 2000 and quickly found success in its support of Nick Scandone, a Newport Beach sailor whose pursuit of Olympic Gold in 2008 became an inspiration for sailors worldwide. Nick was diagnosed with ALS in 2002, and focused all his energy on winning an Olympic gold medal. He realized his dream in Beijing, taking the gold in the SCUD 18 class along with crew Maureen McKinnon-Tucker. The Foundation is proud of its involvement in Nick’s campaign, and continues to help others like him in pursuit of their dreams.

THE NEWPORT BEACH WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 8. 

The Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival (NBWBF), a Balboa Yacht Club event, is a must-see event for Club members, community residents, and tourists alike.  Whether you’re a wooden boat enthusiast or just interested in beautiful things that float, the NBWBF showcases the most diverse and valuable collection of wooden boats in California along with celebrating the art & craftsmanship that goes into designing, building, and maintaining them.
 
This event, which is open to the public, has been named the “Newport Beach Wooden Festival Weekend” by the County of Orange in perpetuity.  The vision of its founder, the late Ralph Rodheim, was to be a legacy event with national status and the finest showcase of wooden boats on the West Coast.  Each year the festival celebrates the passion wooden boat owners have for their vessels, the craftsman who build and maintain them, and the artists who celebrate them in various mediums.
 
Each year the festival committee selects a new event theme offering attendees a fresh take on wooden boats and the experiences they create.  If you haven’t attended the show recently, you’re missing out.
 
Nearly 4,000 visitors regularly attend the event which offers easy, complimentary off-site parking and shuttle service to and from the Balboa Yacht Club.
 
A full slate of exhibits and activities allows individuals and families to enjoy a full day on the shores of Newport Beach Harbor:  There are about 50 wooden boats to tour, wooden boat craftsman at-work, maritime art and exhibits, live music, delicious food and libations, a silent auction, and special children’s activities.
